ETC Division 1&2 - England and Czech Republic get the title !

From the 4th to the 7th of May, the Kahuna Squash and Badminton in Warsaw hosted the event with one glass court and eight hard courts.

Women's Division 1: England wins the title again, the Netherlands takes the thirs place

England won today their 38th title in the ETC, an unreachable record for other nations! The English team played the perfect match today to beat their biggest opponent: France. In the first match, Victoria Lust downed Laura Pomportes in three games. Then Laura Massaro finished the match by beating Camille Serme, in one of the matches that was eagerly awaited! 

The Netherlands took the third place over Wales with victories of Milou Van der Heijden, and Tessa Ter Sluis.

For the third year in a row, England and France faced each other in the final. England first qualified by beating the Netherlands, who were back into the semis. British star Laura Massaro gave the example beating  Natalie Grinham in three, then Sarah-Jane Perry downed Milou Van der Heijden in a great game in four. 

In the second semi-final, France took down Wales in a similar way. Camille Serme had to battle to beat Tesni Evans, who is in very good shape since the start of the competition. Coline Aumard then didn't leave any chance to her opponent, and qualifies France for the final.

Men's Division 1: England gets the title back over France, Scotland in third place

After last year's upset with France bith England, the British players wanted a revenge and they succeeded! England took the best start with Chris Simpson beating Lucas Serme in three games. French star Grégory Gaultier then levelled the score but loosing a crucial game against James Willstrop. Tom Richards finished England's job with a 3-0 win over Geoffrey Demont. France couldn't stick back, the match was over, England can bring the trophy back!

In third place match, Scotland won an exciting game over Germany. With Kevin Moran and Douglas Kempsell's wins, versus a Simon Roesner win for Germany, Greg Lobban scored two games against Raphael Kandra which was enough for a Scotland win!

Two favourites, France and England, were through to the final. France started off with a 3-0 win over Germany, who decided to keep Simon Roesner in good shape for the third place match. Geoffrey Demont scored the first point for his team, then Gregory Gaultier and Raphael Kandra played a spectacular game that went to the Frenchman in three games. Gregoire Marche finished the job, and qualified his team for the final.

In the second match of the day, England had to battle a little more against Scotland. Adrian Waller started with a quick three game win over Rory Stewart. James Willstrop had more of a struggle against Alan Clyne, but took the match in four. In match 3, Chris Simpson only had to score two games to qualify, which he managed after be down by two games against Greg Lobban.

Women's Division 2: Czech Republic dominate Spain and both are up to division 1

In this round robin competition, Spain and Czech Republic are already sure to be the two first teams, both flying over the four other teams in the group. They will both compete in division 1 next year. But before that, they will face each other tomorrow in the last round, in a match that will look like a final. Both teams hadn't lost a single match until the final. But in the final round, Czech Republic took the win in an extraordinary close match with Anna Klimundova winning in five, Zuzana Kobanova winning in four, and Marina De Juan winning for Spain, also in five.

Men's Division 2: Czech Republic beats Switzerland, Wales end up third

Men's division 2 is the biggest draw, as twelve teams were competing to play in division 1 next year. The four teams who ended first of their group competed in the semi-finals. Switzerland first beat easily the Danish team, as two players decided to retire after the game was over. The Swiss players have kept all their energy to face Czech Republic in the final tomorrow. The Czech team beat Wales after a hard match. The score was a draw after the two first matches: Martin Svec and Peter Creed both getting a point for their team. Czech Daniel Mekhbib gave a great chance to his team with a 3-0 win, which enabled Jan Koukal to score the only game needed against Emyr Evans, which ended the match.

Czech Republic made it a double success in division two! They won a thrilling match over Switzerland. Daniel Mekhbib starting off with a victory before that Nicolas Mueller levelled the score. Martin Svec then took a five game win over Dimitri Steinman, and Petr Martin ended the match winning the two last games needed for Czech Republic.

GROUP STAGE

Women's Division 1: France and the Netherlands join England and Wales in the semis

In the women's draw, the favourite teams are filling expectations during this first two days. England won all three matches against Germany, Belgium and Wales. But during the last match against the Welsh player's, it was a great battle especially after Tesni Evans winning the first match against Alison Waters. By beating Germany and Belgium, Wales has qualified for their first semi-final in the ETC

In group B, last-year's runner-up France didn't leave any chances to their tree opponents: The Netherland, Ireland and Denmark, only droppng down three games! With a very young Irish team, the main battle for qualification was between the Netherlands and Denmark. The Dutch players had the last word, beating their opponents thanks to Milou Van der Heijden and Tessa Ter Sluis wins.

Men's Division 1: England and France are through, tough battle for the two left qualifying places won by Germany and Scotland

Reigning champions, France, was first qualified in group A. After beating Ireland and Spain on day 1, the French team had a tough battle with Scotland on Thursday. Mathieu Castagnet had to abandon after one game against Greg Lobban, but the French managed to take to match 3-1. This score was enough for Scotland to qualify for the 5th year in a row in the semi-finals. After the draw between Spain and Scotland, the spanish players were close to qualify for their first semi-final ever, but Scotland's point against France was crucial. 

In group B, as expected, England took over their three opponents to qualify for the semi-finals. Even if they drew yesterday against the Netherlands, the German players take the second place and will have the opportunity to defend their bronze medal obtained last year.

This group stage already enabled spectators to assist to very high level matches, like Gregory Gaultier vs Borja Golan, or James Willstrop vs Simon Rösner.
