Slovenian Junior Open 2014

The saying goes that there's a first time for everything. And so the first time for Slovenia to organize an Open Junior event finally came as well. The draw saw players from six countries (Armenia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey) battling for medals in four age groups.

The 39 players showed great skill, technique and (above all) fair play and good spirit. Girls only had one age group, under 13. Six girls fought over three days in a round robin group. Favourites were obvious and the gold went to Hungary as expected. Mercedesz Szabo was just too strong for the others. Second place went to Franka Vidovic from Croatia and third to Andela Vrgotic from Serbia. Although she had not won a medal, we absolutely have to mention Ruzgar Boyle from Turkey. At half the winner's size and only 8 years of age she won the spectators hearts with her relentless will and love of squash.

Boys under 13 produced one of two silver medalists for the home team. Žiga Mercun overcame second seeded player Vukašin Vitorovic in the quarterfinal, which was everything but expected. Completely physically and emotionally drained from that success he was no match for the first seed Simon Nagy from Hungary the following day. Jan Cerovac ended third in that age group, overcoming Jovan Radovanovic.

Boys U15 was the largest draw of all with 15 players competing.

We saved the final of the strongest, boys under 17 age group to entertain the crowd as the very last match of the event. And quite a match it was! Croatia's favourite and No. 1 seed Martin Kegel beat home favourite Andraz Demsar in straight games. These two boys, so close to adulthood, showed to all of us how squash should be played. Hardly any interference at all, playing every ball, calling their shots down, respecting their opponent through the whole match. With juniors like these the future of our sport seems really bright.

With this amazing experience we can only look forward to organising the second edition of Slovenian Junior Open in 2015!
