Italian Referees Aiming High

Italy, one of the strongest countries in Europe, squash-wise, has yet to produce a Regional Referee. The Italian National Squash Association (FIGS) decided to give their referees full support in progressing up the ladder and the first step was the organisation of a workshop for experienced referees.

A dozen Italian referees spent the weekend of 4th - 5th May in Riccione at the National Squash Centre with Marko Podgoršek, the WSF Referee from Slovenia. After spending a short while re-affirming their knowledge of the basics and pointing out where the new Rules are different, the main focus was on management. Nothing to do with economics, of course – the management in question was managing oneself, the enviroment, the venue and most important of all, the players. Up-to-date video material was priceless and provided a lot of room for discussion on different aspects of refereeing. Hopefully this course will add at least a little something to their refereeing, helping them to progress towards Regional and WSF level in the near future.
