Italy and Ireland take European Team Division 3 titles

Italy won a tight men's final while Ireland were women's winners at the ESF European Teams Division 3 Championships in Bucharest on Saturday.

A dramatic men's final saw Italy beat hosts Romania 8-6 on games countback after the match had finished 2-2 overall. 

Yuri Farneti beat Romania captain Hapun Vasile in straight games, but Radu Pena made it 1-1 with a four-game victory over Carmine Chiappetta. Dumitru Goian, a student at Drexel University, won in four but Italy levelled the contest through Laurenzo Staurengo. 

Italy, however, took the title thanks to winning two more games. They and Romania will be promoted to Division Two for 2025.

Leichtenstein won the bronze medals by virtue of a 2-1 victory over Croatia. Jersey won an extraordinary fifth-place play-off against Slovenia in which all matches went to five and were shared 2-2. Jersey took it 189-180 on points countback.

In the women's event, Ireland beat Ukraine 2-0 in rapid fashion but both nations will take their places in Division 2 next year. Breanne Flynn and Hannah Craig both won in straight games against Milena Velychko and Anastasia Kostiukova respectively.

Ken Flynn, the Irish team coach, said: "For our players it was all about following the game plan, controlling the emotions and the opponent and looking for the opportunities."

Italy beat Sweden 2-0 to earn the bronze medals and Austria overcame Malta to finish fifth.
