Germany and Scotland lift European Team Championship Division 2 titles

Germany's women and Scotland's men were crowned champions of Division 2 at the ESF European Team Squash Championships in Zurich on Saturday.

Germany, who were relegated from Division 1 at last year's championships in Helsinki, celebrated their return to the top table of European squash with a 2-0 victory over Finland's women at the Uster Squash Arena.

Saskia Beinhard kickstarted the German victory with a 7-11 12-10 11-5 3-11 2-11 over Emilia Soini, then third string Sharon Sinclair beat Finland's Riina Koskinen 11-3 11-2 11-7. Despite defeat, Finland also earn promotion to Division 1 for 2025 courtesy of reaching the final.

World no.64 Beinhard said: "It's very important to be back in Division 1. We didn't want to say it at the beginning of the tournament but this was definitely our goal. We were so happy yesterday that we knew we'd reached our goal by getting to the final, but winning today was the second most  important thing. I'm very happy with the win and the gold medal."

Of her five-game win over Sioni, which saw her recover from 2-1 down, Beinhard commented: "In the third game I was completely out of balance and I didn't know what I was doing - and she was completely on point.

"I was very happy with my fightback and my concentration in the last two games. In the end I was definitely the fitter one but Emilia is a very skilful player. At 7-0 up in the fifth, it's definitely a score where you assume you'll win the match, but I thought, 'I could still lose this.' I was so tense and I'm very happy that I won it."

In the men's Division 2 final, Scotland conquered Hungary 3-0 with Alasdair Prott winning in straight games, the legendary Greg Lobban grinding out a gruelling 9-11 11-3 3-11 11-6 11-3 over Farkas Balasz and Martin Ross made short work of a 11-7 11-2 11-4 win against Bendegúz Kamocsai.

Ross, who is making his Scotland debut this week in Zurich, said: "It's really cool. I've won my first senior caps this week so I wanted to come out and let everyone know that I deserve my part in this team.

"Obviously last year was very disappointing getting relegated. I was watching it from home and everybody around Scottish squash was disappointed with the results. It was really important to get back to where we belong and hopefully next year we'll be challenging for medals."
